Deborah L. Morris is a multi-disciplinary artist with a focus on fiber and textile.

She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and has participated in residencies at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and Mana Contemporary Miami.  Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is part of the collection of the Chojun Textile and Quilt Art Museum in Seoul, South Korea.  Deborah received a 2023 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.  She is currently the president of the Textile Study Group of New York.

Morris is a collector of materials and objects.  Her Jersey City studio is filled with equipment and supplies spanning most art mediums; She works intuitively, crafting her works with a focus on the tactile nature of her materials and their interactions with each other.  She allows the haptic qualities of her materials to guide her process and selection of mediums.

I enjoy exploring and creating textural works in a variety of medium; manipulating and combining them to form interesting and unexpected relationships.  This can be seen in my photographic and sculptural work and heard in my music.

I have always been drawn to collage and the layering of disparate materials to form something new.

For 20 years I pursued this love through the layering of sounds as a performing musician with the Javanese gamelan orchestra, Kusuma Laras.  I have returned to visual arts focusing on fiber, weaving and ceramics.
